January Weekends

Some good things must come to an end, so we have returned our living room to the pre-giftmas configuration and packed our tree and ornaments in storage for another year. I did however receive my last gift January 9th - Jenn got us a class for basic knife skills at The Chopping Block. Seeing as how much we cook Jenn figured it'd be wise to learn how to properly use a knife; it was definitely worth our time! We learned from the professionals (really, professional cooks) how to wield a chef's knife, what some of the lesser known knives are for, etc, and we had the opportunity to chop up some veggies while being critiqued. While we were cutting up the veggies we also got the chance to use several different brands and models of chef's knives and both decided the Shun 8" chef's knife was our favorite knife, so we purchased it along with an Epicurean cutting board.

Yesterday Jenn and I took in Avatar 3D on the IMAX. The movie is fantastic - an excellent story and beautifully rendered. The 3D part was interesting - the glasses were a bit strange to wear and it felt like you had to focus on exactly what they wanted you to focus on which drew away from the ability to really take in all the detail of the picture. I'm looking forward to seeing Avatar again on our TV so we can further explore the world of Pandora.

Holidays!

Well, it's that time of year again! My birthday was early last week, Christmas was this past weekend, and New Years is fast approaching!

For my birthday I had to work during the day but Jeremy sent flowers to my office with a cute little bear hugging the vase. The bear is currently guarding my monitors from the evil cleaning people who like to trash my desk (don't worry, I'm as confused about it as you are). After I got home from work I got to open my presents! Jeremy's parents sent a deep dish pie plate from Pampered Chef that I've had my eye on and Jeremy got me a lovely ring from Tiffany & Co! For dinner, we headed over to the Chicago Diner. After dinner we came home, put on our pajamas, laid on the couch and ate carrot cake from the Diner and played video games until it was time for sleep. Other than the having to work part, the whole day was exactly what I wanted :)

Unfortunately we couldn't be on two sides of the state at once for Christmas, so we decided to head to my parents place for Christmas this year. Since we wouldn't be able to be with them during Christmas, Jeremy's parents sent us our gifts about a week and a half ago. Now, I would like to say that we were good and put the gifts under the tree and waited until Christmas to open them... but temptation got the best of us and we ended up opening them as soon as they got here ;) Not only did they spoil us with a ton of stuff from Pampered Chef but I also got 2 cookbooks that I've been wanting for months! Vegan Brunch and Vegan Yum Yum. Both cookbooks are awesome and we've already made a few recipes out of Vegan Yum Yum! I think Jeremy's favorite thing that we received was the Garlic Peeler & Slicer Set which works amazingly! To peel the garlic you just put it in the peeler, roll it around in your hands for about 4 seconds and you have perfectly peeled garlic! The slicer is equally as easy to use, just put the peeled cloves of garlic in the slicer, turn, and you have perfectly sliced garlic.

Before heading to Iowa, Jeremy and I exchanged our gifts. One of the things we picked out together were matching robes from Brookstone. Now, I'm not normally a robe person, actually I think I've only worn a robe twice before in my life, but these are by far the softest and most comfortable things I have ever had the pleasure of lounging around in. In addition to some smaller items, the one gift I'm most proud of getting for Jeremy - a knife skills lesson at the Chopping Block cooking school here in Chicago. The class looks like it should be a lot of fun and informative. They'll teach us how to cut up all sorts of different vegetables properly, how to pick out knives, and all about how to properly care for knives. Some of the neat things Jeremy got me were a Magic Mouse for use with my laptop when I'm working at home, a book that I'm excited to get started on, and donut pans! Of course, after receiving said donut pans, I promptly made a batch of cake donuts the next morning. I've got to tell you, having donut pans is as dangerous as it sounds!

On Thursday the snow finally changed to rain and we were able to make the drive to Iowa. The roads weren't too bad for the most part but a little icy in some spots. When we got to my parents' house, our niece was there so we got to play with her for a few hours and give her her gifts. One of the things we gave her was a little kitten that you pet it's back and it purrs and kneads it's paws. It came with a little purse to carry the kitten in ala Paris Hilton style which she loved. Friday morning we opened presents and the big thing we got was a toaster oven which I have been wanting for years! We gave my parents a digital picture frame with about 250 pictures (150 of which I spent a whole day scanning a few days before) which they loved. For my brother we decided to go with things that were more practical and got him new dishes, silverware, glasses, towels, candles, etc for his apartment which he appreciated.

After all of the gifts were opened, we spent the better part of the next 48 hours playing cards, napping, and watching movies. I think my dad described it best when he said, "It felt like a 2 day party!" I taught everyone how to play a variation of the game Oh Hell which we ended up playing for hours. After everyone had had enough Oh Hell, we switched to playing Texas Hold'em. The first night everyone was pretty much even but the second night I went on a winning streak. I got first, second, second, first, second, first, second, first and ended up coming out about a dollar ahead after 2 days (we were only playing for a quarter each game). On Sunday, after our 2 day party, we finally headed back to Chicago.

All in all, I honestly couldn't have hoped for a better holiday season. This was, by far, my favorite Christmas/Birthday I've had in years thanks to my amazing husband and all of our wonderful family. :)

No Charlie Brown Christmas for us!

Catch up time!

Wow we slacked off. The initial date on this post was September 28th (now December 9th). Needless to say, it's catch up time!

So a lot has happened recently, so naturally we haven't posted any of it here. Jenn and I decided to take a road trip back to NW Iowa to lovely (ha!) Sheldon, Iowa. Before embarking on such a daunting task (9 hours in the car, one way) we decided the VDub had to go, so after doing some research online we decided a trip to Schaumburg, IL was in our future to the Carmax to purchase a Toyota Corolla. We picked out a 2007 Corolla, took it for a test drive and noticed a check engine light was on. Assured that they'd correct whatever was wrong we went ahead and completed the purchase of the car trading in the vdub, but had to leave the car there to be worked on first thing in the morning.

We decided on the way home that something wasn't right, with the severity of the light indicator constantly being upgraded so we high tailed it back to the 'burbs the following day to return the '07 and drove home in a 2006 Toyota Corolla S. A year older, but it has less miles than the '07 had, has better interior, and is all in all more 'sportier', which makes sense given the 'S' moniker. The car runs great and was exactly what we wanted - a reliable, affordable car that will last us as long as we want it to that we can both easily drive in the city.

So now with the car situation handled it was time to set forth on our grand adventure. Jenn and I hadn't taken a proper vacation together yet, so we decided to splurge on a weekend getaway to Madison, WI first to both break up the drive and to just get away together. We stayed at the Madison Concourse Hotel & Governor's Club in downtown Madison, WI overlooking the state capitol. It was absolutely fantastic. We stayed on the Governor's Club level (keycard access, a view overlooking the capitol, and open bar at the lounge every night) and the room was absolutely amazing. We lounged around, watched horrible television, and just generally enjoyed not having any responsibilities or time commitments to meet.

With a heavy heart we decided that staying an extra day would not put us any closer to our goal, so we packed the Corolla and headed west, leaving scenic Wisconsin and entering the flat, barren farm lands of Minnesota. The drive quickly became repetitive, but luckily we had each other to help pass the time. Hours later we finally pulled into Sheldon (no thanks to the guy that didn't look left pulling out of the Hy-Vee parking lot) and got checked into our hotel there. We should have thought that through a little better - going from a top of the line, beautiful hotel in Madison, WI to the hotel in Sheldon was a bit of a shock, but after reminding ourselves that we weren't living there and weren't planning on spending too much time there anyway we headed over to my parents house to spend some time with them.

Jason and Mandy brought Johnathan on Saturday, so we spent the early afternoon watching him roll over and generally search out anything smaller than his mouth, so he could stick that item in his mouth. The kid's getting big, and is probably the best behaved/least whiny child I've ever been around (which is admittedly very few). Once 5:00 rolled around Jenn and I ventured out to my 10 year High School reunion. It was good seeing everybody again and catching up with people I hadn't seen since graduating. We were amazed by the turn out, and almost everybody I wanted to see ended up being there, which was quite impressive.

We traded Jason and Mandy for my sister Jen (driving their souped up Mustang Shelby GT) and Evan (driving his monster of a motorcycle) on Sunday, and we hung out with them during the day. Evan took Jenn for a motorcycle ride to the booming metropolis of Primghar, and later that night we cruised the Sheldon strip with Ed piloting the Mustang.

We awoke to dense fog, but did not let that deter us and started our trek east across Iowa. We stopped in Cedar Falls to grab lunch with Mike, and then continued on to see Jenn's dad's new 2010 Camero SS. He treated us to a short jaunt around town, we caught up a bit on what's been happening in Dubuque, then set out once more to complete our journey back home to civilization.

Jenn helped the Crafster folks at the Renegade Craft show (she's a mod over on their forums, a darn good one too!) on September 12th and 13th, demonstrating how much of a pro she is at anything she sets her mind to, be it making buttons or selling t-shirts or stickers. I ended up lending a small hand lugging tables, moving boxes, and generally just helping with some manual labor, and all and all we had a fantastic time. We found some extremely cute pictures that now hang in our living room, and I found Jenn a super cute pocket note pad thing in a case. Something that Jenn really seems to like. :)

Watch this space for an Anniversary post - Jenn and I celebrated our first year together in between this last post (evidenced by the post I made on the 25th marking our first 365 days).

There's a few more things (new LCD TV, an XBox 360, a Netflix subscription (instant watch is fantastic), Wii Fit Plus (a definite step up from regular Wii Fit), Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii and two mats, etc) but I think this post is quite long enough by now. Here's hoping we keep up better in the future! We're both really looking forward to Christmas - maybe a post about our awesome tree and the great things under it will be forthcoming. :)
